Swing Beds F.A.Q.
What sizes do swing beds come in?
Swing beds are most commonly sized by the type of mattress they fit. The most popular are 4 foot (45" x 39" mattress), Crib (52" x 28" mattress), 5 Foot (55" x 39" mattress), 6 Foot (68" x 39" mattress), and Twin (75" x 39" mattress). There are also select swings offered to fit Full, Queen, and even King sized outdoor mattresses. Daybed-sized swings may come in non-standard mattress configurations and, if so, often come with cushions and pillow sets included.
How do I measure my porch for the right size?
Your swing bed should be sized according to the dimensions of the space it will go in. For porches and areas with walls or structures that may impede the swing, we recommend at least 6 inches of clearance on either side of your swing, and 24 inches of clearance in front and behind the swing to ensure it does not make contact with the surrounding structure.
Once you ensure your hanging bed is clear of obstacles, the choice of how large is up to you. 4 foot and 5 foot swing beds are perfect for 2-3 people, but we find that the most popular size with families is a twin size swing bed.
What materials are swing beds offered in?
Wood is the most common swing bed material, providing strength and durability in construction while also allowing for premium finishes. Pine and cedar are the most popular wood types, but some swing beds are cypress and teak. Poly lumber is also a popular choice due to its weather-resistance. Metal and wicker swing beds are gaining in popularity, offering design styles that wood is unable to.
How do I install my swing bed?
We recommend working with a licensed professional to hang your swing bed. First, you should ensure your ceiling or structure has been constructed or reinforced to hold the weight of the swing bed. Next, you will want to tie any included ropes per the manufacturer's instructions. Then, you can attach the rope or chain to a swing hanging hook that installs directly into your joists or beams. You will want to leave 18-24" from the floor to the swing, ensure the swing is level, and finish installation.
What else do I need for my bed swing?
You will likely need an outdoor-rated mattress, back cushions, and bolster pillows to make your swing as comfortable as possible. Look for Sunbrella or olefin material to ensure moisture and UV-resistance. Then, complete the look with square accent and rectangular lumbar pillows to bring your design to life.
